Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) is the sheriff of the peaceful, quiet, and sparsely populated Arizona town of Somerton. With most of the town away attending a high school football game, the sheriff plans to enjoy a day off. Those plans are about to go south; federal prisoner Gabriel Cortez (Noriega), head of the mexican cartel, escapes FBI custody. He has a carefully-laid plan to escape the country, and plenty of henchmen and firepower to execute that plan. His escape route to Mexico goes right through the main street of Somerton. It’s up to the sheriff and his meager handful of deputies to stop him from making it to the border.
Until the feds can get to Somerton and apprehend Cortez, the sheriff needs all the help and firepower he can get to out gun Gabriel’s cartel cronies, so he calls on local character Lewis Dinkum (Knoxville), who just happens to run, of all things, a weapons museum. Dinkum’s addition to the team gives them some leverage, but will that be enough to stop Cortez?
Get out the popcorn, sit back, and strap in! Fast-paced and never a dull moment, “The Last Stand” blows the doors off, literally! I don’t know about you, but I enjoy these kinds of movies. This is a good old fashioned bang-bang-shoot ’em up; bullets fly fast and furious! This movie has it all: an outlaw, a sheriff, car chases, and gun battles – gun battles with major firepower blowing things up. Just to warn you, it is very violent (close to “Tarantino” level). This is the kind of movie that the powers that be want to blame things on, and in light of recent events, I would not be surprised if this movie comes up in that conversation. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying this wild ride!
I admit when I first got the assignment to review this film I was thinking, “…really? Arnold?” I didn’t think I was going to like it, but boy was I wrong! If you can’t get with Arnold as your hero, just imagine your favorite aging bad ass as the sheriff. Personally, I could see Clint Eastwood pulling this off easily, Bruce Willis could possibly fit the bill as well, but if you dig action at a roller coaster pace, you can’t beat the “Terminator” himself. Aside from a never-say-die hero, you’ve got to love a bad guy who’s smooth. His escape from custody is almost of “Bond” level villainy. He slips the feds and takes off to Somerton in a top of the line ZR1 Corvette at speeds of close to 200 mph. And if you love cars, there is also a beautiful ZL1 Camaro in the mix. It’s pure pleasure to hear those engines fire and see that horsepower in action.
When it comes down to it, if you’re looking for a great flight of action-packed fancy, this movie rocks! “The Last Stand” is not to be missed!
