Wade Wilson is a mercenary that hangs out in a dive bar with other mercenaries waiting for their next assignments. One night he meets Vanessa and his life changes. Wade and Vanessa begin a very wild and passionate relationship until Wade is struck with multiple organ cancer. Wade is devastated at this news and is confused about what to do next. Enter a representative from a mysterious benefactor who offers Wade the opportunity for a cure for his disease. At first Wade rejects the offer, but he doesn’t want to put Vanessa through the hell of living with a cancer patient, so he agrees to go through with it. As Wade undergoes treatment he discovers that he’s not in a medical research unit but a shadow operation designed to create mutant muscle for hire. He is put through various tortured and drugs, the final treatment he receives which is designed to boost his mutation to kick in, destroys and disfigures his skin. Furious with Francis, the operator in charge of the project, Wade escapes and plots revenge on him. Too afraid to go back to his lady love Vanessa for fear she will reject him as hideous monster, Wade finds solace in a new roommate and an old friend who help him in his quest for revenge. Wade who has now become a masked vigilante named Deadpool leaves a trail of bodies in his quest for Francis who claims to have a cure for Deadpool’s skin condition, but there is more at stake than just Deadpool’s looks. Francis tips his hand by kidnapping Vanessa, and Deadpool wastes no time in coming for Francis with guns blazing!

Deadpool is dope, freaky, hilarious fun on a bun! Think Van Wilder meets X-Men. Deadpool is not, I repeat, NOT your typical superhero movie and this movie is fully aware that it IS a movie. Ryan Reynolds constantly breaks the 4th wall. He even breaks the 4th wall within a 4th wall break, which is like what, 16 walls? There are constant meta jokes and jabs. For Example, as Deadpool is being dragged by the mutant Colossus after a fight, Colossus says “I’m taking you to Professor Xavier,” to which Deadpool quips: “McAvoy or Stewart?” Reynolds is totally what you would NOT expect in a superhero. He loves unicorns. (No, seriously. I mean it. Yes, in that way) He wears Bea Arthur and RENT t-shirts and he’s also comfortable enough in his orientation to allow his girlfriend to occasionally strap one on and go to town. Deadpool is a palate cleanser for the current glut of Marvel/DC superhero movies. Even if you’re not a fan of Marvel movies, you will LOVE Deadpool. It’s just too hilarious, and the cast performances are solid. Comedian TJ Miller, who is always a treat, does not miss a beat as Deadpool’s bestie Weasel. Gotham‘s Morena Baccarin is the gritty yet warm Vanessa. It was a great surprise and pleasure to see Broadway actress and TV veteran Leslie Uggams as the sassy Blind Al, Deadpool’s post mutation roommate. While there is humor at every turn there is still plenty of action here, this is a Marvel movie after all, but it is a welcome change from the status quo. Also there are great music choices in this film. That seems to be a going thing in Marvel films since X-Men: Days of Future Past and Guardians of the Galaxy. Let’s hope that trend continues.   As with most if not all Marvel movies there is the obligatory Stan Lee cameo and post credits scene. I won’t give it away, but it’s very fitting given who you’re dealing with. Go see Deadpool! I guarantee you will have a great time! The only caution I have is that this movie is NOT, I repeat NOT FOR KIDS! You may have taken your kids, nieces, nephews to other superhero movies, but I urge you to leave them at home for this one. Rated R, Deadpool is strictly for the adults.
