Raised by her mom, 15 year old Clary Fray seems to be a typical teenage girl. Artistic and plucky. She goes out with her bestie Simon one night to a club. At that club she sees someone murdered, but she is the only one who sees it. Not Simon, not the people around her. One young man who committed the “murder” sees Clary and wonders why she can see him. Clary is understandably shaken and confused. The next day she sees the young man who was at the club. Again she is the only one who can see him. She confronts him to ask why. He tells her he is a Shadowhunter.  Shadowhunters are half angel and half human and their job is to kill demons. If she is a “mundane” (a regular human) she should not be able to see him. Before he can provide more answers or ask more questions, Clary gets a call from her mom telling her not to come home and to go somewhere safe. Clary frantically rushes home and Jace, the Shadowhunter comes with her to help. They find her flat trashed and her mother missing. Jace explains that Clary’s mother was a Shadowhunter and that explains why she can see him. That makes Clary a Shadowhunter as well. Clary dosen’t understand what is going on so Jace takes her to the Shadowhunter home called the Instiute, where Clary learns about her past, and her mother’s past and what she needs to do to get her mother back.

“You’re a wizard Shadowhunter, Clary.”

Harry Potter meets Buffy The Vampire Slayer here. Throw in a Stargate portal and the small “wands” that the Shadowhunters use are little more than sonic screwdrivers. Sorry, but all I could see were Harry Potter paralells. The Institute for Hogwarts; calling regular people mundanes instead of muggles, etc. I’m not into the books so I dont know how true to the source material it is, but City of Bones is the first book in a six book series, so if this does well there will probably be more movies coming.

TMI: City Of Bones is Typical teen angst and romance complete with a sappy pop ballad blaring for the first kiss scene. That kiss turns out to be a little creepy later on when Clary and Jace find out who they are to each other. Total teen smorgasboard here, music, hot young kids, hot clothes (Black leather, heels and tight pants and dresses are the uniform of the day for Shadowhunters, because they can’t dress like “mundanes”), warlocks, witches, vampires, werewolves. If you’re into all that, then this movie will be absolute joy for you. Should be a natch for Tri-hards (but the vamps don’t sparkle). I found it mildly entertaining. It was a little long (over 2 hrs) and boring to me, but I’m not a teenager, so…enjoy?
