James Hunt and Niki Lauda were two of the most successful Formula One race car drivers in the world. They met in the early 70s when they were both starting out in Formula Three competition. James was a wildcard, devil-may-care, partying playboy with a different girl every night; and Niki was quiet, self controlled, and focused. From the time those two met, they instantly rubbed each other the wrong way and thus began one of the greatest rivalries in racing history.

Both men were obsessed with being the best and beating each other to be the best. James (Hemsworth) was a loose cannon who partied like every day would be his last. He had a wealthy benefactor to finance his career. Niki was not so lucky. Niki’s father wanted him to be a banker, but Niki’s passion was for the drive. Niki (Bruhl) took out a loan and bought his way onto a racing team, where he proceeded to use his skills at modification to rebuild a better, faster car. James and Niki then make their way on the Formula One circuit. Race after race, their rankings rising and falling as they battle for the top, until the German Grand Prix in 1976. Niki Lauda’s car malfunctioned resulting in a near fatal crash. He was pulled from the burning wreckage with third degree burns on his head and scorched, burned lungs.

While recuperating he watched as James climbed up and up in the rankings. Watching James’ success fueled Niki’s obsession even more, compelling him to get well enough to race as soon as possible. A little over a month later, against doctor’s advice, Niki returns to drive again hoping to reclaim his place in the champion rankings, but is it too late for him to come back? Does he still have his edge, and what will this mean for James?

Director Ron Howard shines as he captures the fury and the roar of the engines as well as the passion that drives these two men as obsessed with each other as with sport that they both love. He keeps you at the edge of your seat curve after curve of each track, and gives you a revealing look into the headspace of these drivers. Based on the true story of their lives, the pacing of this film is evenly tempered. The downtime is used very well and does not slow the intensity of the story. If you are a race fan then this movie is pure heaven. If you aren’t a race fan, basic story of the contest between these two champions is still very compelling and I think worth a look.
