How to Train Your Dragon 2 (HTTYD2) takes place five years after the first movie. The vikings of Berk have made peace with the dragons and they all live very happily with each other. Hiccup has come of age and is in line to take his father Stoick’s place as chief. While the other viking youths have races and play games with their dragons, Hiccup and his dragon Toothless explore the neighboring lands to chart them. Accompanied by his girlfriend Astrid, Hiccup discovers a settlement encased in huge formations of ice. They come up against a group of ruffians lead by Eret who by vocation is a dragon trapper. He works for a mysterious warlord named Drago. Eret thinks Hiccup and his people are responsible for the ice destruction and try to trap his and Astrid’s dragons to take them to Drago. He explains that Drago is building a dragon army. Hiccup and Astrid return to Berk to let Stoick and the village know what Drago is planning. Stoick begins to prepare everyone for war, but Hiccup believes he can reason with Drago. Stoick tries to tell Hiccup that Drago is a madman that cannot be reasoned with, but for the good of all, Hiccup believes he has to try. He refuses to accept that people don’t change, so he seeks out Drago to confront him. The villainous Drago has plans to amass a dragon army to conquer the world.

On his journey Hiccup encounters a mysterious stranger who seems to know him. This stranger also has a way with dragons just like he does. This mysterious stranger, Valka,  is a rescuer of abused dragons. She also holds a secret from his past. With Valka’s and his father’s help, Hiccup, the dragons and his friends all confront Drago’s army to stop his plan for world domination.

HTTYD2 is a delightful sequel to the 2010 animated classic. All the original voice cast are back to reprise their roles with the addition of Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond, Amistad) as the voice of the murderous Drago. It’s a truly fun, satisfying romp that at times pulls at your heartstrings. Beautiful cinematography. As good as if not better than the original so if you enjoyed the first movie, you will really like this one.
