Set in 1916 and present-day Manhattan, Winter’s Tale is the story of Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), a young, poor, immigrant thief who falls in love with beautiful rich girl Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay). They meet while he is robbing her house, and while she should be afraid of him and calling for help, she offers him a cup of tea instead. As they bond over their tea she explains that she is dying of tuberculosis and is planning to join the rest of her family at their vacation house. Peter, while totally taken with her explains that he would like to see her again, but he has to leave town for a while. Peter’s former boss, insane Irish gangster Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe), is looking to kill him, which is why he was making one last heist to have the money to live on the run. Pearly wants to kill Peter simply because Peter has developed a conscience. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone if he can help it, and Pearly sees this as a weakness—a weakness that has to be destroyed. Peter has been saved from confrontation so far with the help of a mysterious white horse that has seemingly become his guardian angel.
Pearly, who unknown to Peter is actually a demon in service to Lucifer (Will Smith), realizes that Beverly is the key to turning Peter back to his side. so he intends to end her life to break Peter’s spirit. Peter and Pearly have one last confrontation that leaves Peter in a state of limbo. Not remembering who he is or what has transpired, Peter wanders the world in a fog for decades until present day. Peter slowly begins to realize who he is and that possibly he was meant to save someone else’s life and that the brief love that he and Beverly shared was the miracle that has kept him alive to make that possible.
Based on the 1983 novel by Mark Helprin, Winter’s Tale is a lovely piece of fantasy romance. It’s a timeless tale of love verses hate and good against evil. A fabulous cast which includes veteran actress Eva Marie Saint and a refreshingly unexpected turn by Will Smith as Lucifer. It genuinely is an interesting sight to see him and Russell in their scenes together. If you enjoy period drama and fantasy, Winter’s Tale is the perfect film to share with a loved one. It leaves you with a glow that the time we have with our loved ones is special, and all too short. Love is a miracle, so don’t hesitate to share it and be that miracle for each other.
