In the distant future, society is at war: regular humans vs. mutants and humans who carry the mutant gene. The goal is for the total annihilation of the mutant race, but this war sees heavy casualties on each side. With a unique set of skills, the last of the mutant rebels are trying to change history one battle at a time, but thanks to a revolutionary invention known as Sentinels, they are rapidly losing. Sentinels are gigantic robotic hunters and exterminators of mutants that were created by scientist Bolivar Trask and his company Trask Industries. They were created by studying the DNA of one mutant in particular: Mystique. At a time in the past Mystique tried to assassinate Trask, but the plan failed. They captured her, studied her, and experimented on her. They managed to understand her power to transform and used that knowledge to create the sentinels. With the war progressively becoming worse, Professor Xavier, Magneto, and the remaining mutant resistance have come to the end of their rope, so they devise a plan that will hopefully change history forever. They want to send Wolverine back in time to team up with the younger Charles Xavier and Magneto to find Mystique and stop her from trying to kill Trask, thus insuring the sentinels were never created and hopefully changing the future for the better. Wolverine has to find and convince a young, undisciplined Charles Xavier what is going to happen and try to get him and the younger Erik Lehnsherr to work together for the good of all mutants, and ultimately, human kind.

X-Men days of future past is a great addition to the X-Men list of movies. This is not really a sequel to X-Men First Class, but a continuation of events in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) storyline. Of course the original cast has returned. It is a joy to see James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as the younger Charles and Erik, the lovely Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, and Hugh Jackman of course as Wolverine. Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) is Bolivar Trask, the arrogant military scientist whose creation becomes the undoing of society. Two new mutants are added to this mix in the way of Ellen Page (Juno, Inception) as Kitty Pryde who’s abilities enable Wolverine to time travel. Also Evan Peters as Quicksilver, a mutant with the ability to run at supersonic speeds. There is one scene where we see this very cheekily done with Jim Croce’s Time In A Bottle in the background.

Plenty of action and excitement in this film and the trip back in time to the 70s is very interesting if only for the retro product placement of Mountain Dew and Hostess cakes. If you are a fan of the X-Men, Days Of Future Past is a no-brainer. Just a heads up, as with most Marvel movies there is a post credits scene.
